The Helen Keller Institute for Deafblind (HKIDB) in Mumbai was established in 1977 as the first organisation in India to develop education programmes for deafblind children. It focuses on developing the skills of deafblind children and young adults and supporting their integration into society. Initiated by Sense India, in partnership with Rangoonwala Foundation, and The Clarke School in Tamil Nadu, India’s first and largest teacher training programme for practitioners working with the deaf blind has been one of their core focuses alongside their direct work with children. The objective of the partnership is to enable highly qualified teachers to start units for the deaf blind or incorporate them into other programmes.
